History of the Grandfather Clock

"Grandfather Clock" got its name from American Songwriter named Henry Work.

Way back in about 1875, Henry was on trip to England when he was told a story about an old floor clock at the hotel where he stayed. The hotel was known as the George Hotel.

This hotel was managed by the Jenkins brothers. One unusual characteristic on the old clock was that it kept very good time. This was uncommon, since in those days clocks were generally not noted for their accuracy.

One day, the clock started losing time after one of the brothers died, and eventually stopped working completely at the day the surviving brother died at ninety.

Henry then decided to compose a song about the fascinating coincidence that the clock stopped forever  the moment its elder owner passed away.

The song was an immediate hit and from that time on, the floor clock had been known as the "Grandfather Clock".
